How much time it can take to drop the price of Porsche 911 Targa Top – After 49 years of lurking in the pages of Porsche history, the Targa has finally made an appearance at the Detroit Auto Show. It was the same iconic design which saved convertibles from the brink of extinction. An average person would see the Porsche 911 Targa as a 911 with a really big sunroof, but after the release of the new model in 2016, it has become a lot more than just that.
The new car model represents the comeback of the well-known 1965 design, however for the 2016 Targa model we’re talking about removable front roof and wraparound rear windows sections. Unlike the older model, this year’s variant comes with a pioneering roof segment that can be opened/closed with a push of a button in 19 seconds.
As far as the price Porsche 911 Targa is concerned, it looks like the starting price is $115,900, and from what we’re seen so far it will probably take a while for this outrageous cost to drop. In fact, there’s also a Chrono package waiting for those willing to spend $130,000 on the new Porsche Targa.
Pioneering specifications
Instead of it having a glass roof which sides over, it has a new folding cloth roof. This has two moving parts – one being the rear glass window and the other being cloth center roof panel. The rear window is fixed on a clamshell. It basically has the same mechanics as the top found on a 911 Cabriolet. It only takes 19 seconds to fully deploy or retract the roof while the car is not moving – that is about six seconds longer than it takes the 991 series to retract its roof.
The entire system is power-retractable and what this means is that with a push of the button the rear window pops open and tilts backwards followed by the opening of two flaps in the Targa bar (which unlocks the fabric roof section). The bar is then folded into a Z, and is tucked behind the rear seats.
Technicals
The car features a 3.4 liter flat-six engine which produces a deadly 350 horsepower. It can hit 60mph in 5.2 seconds and has a top speed of 175mph. This is slightly slower than the 911 Carrera 4 Coupe and the 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet. The reason for the slower speed is the difference in weight. The Targa 4 is slightly heavier than both the other cars. However, there is a Sport Chrono package available for the 911 Targa which will slash the 0-60mph time to 5.0 seconds but as a result the top speed of the car will drop to 174mph – which quite frankly is a great trade off considering you will probably never hit 175mph on a highway.
If you’re look for that little extra bit of speed, the 4S version of the Targa has 400-horsepower direct-injection 3.8-liter flat-six. With these stats, 0-60mph is achieved within 4.8 seconds and the car reaches a new top speed of 183mph.The Sport Chrono package for the 4S will lower the 0-60mph time to a blistering 4.6mph, but at a the same time it will also lower the top speed to 182mph.
Price package
911 Targa 4’s suggested price is $115,900 and if you’re going for the Chrono boost package you’re going to have to set aside $120,560. Unsatisfied with the performance of the Targa 4? When then you will obviously want to go for the 4S; yet, with great performance comes great cost. The 4S has a suggested retail value of $ 132,600 and with the sports chrono package, prices soar to $137,260.
Both the models will come with an all-wheel drive as a standard feature.That’s a lot of money for a very little increase in the top speed considering almost all of the roads these days have speed limits, so the only time you will hit that magic 183mph is when you’re on a racetrack – or when there are no cops on the road. Bottom line, the new Porsche Targa looks fabulous, and it’s certainly worth purchasing; however, some of you may have to break a bank to get that kind of money and benefit from all the luxuries Porsche has added to the new model.
